Using a lotion formulated for indoor tanning can increase your results by 40-60% each session!
Did you know you lose around 40% of your session if you tan without an indoor tanning lotion? Investing in a good lotion can actually save you time and money while building and maintaining your tan! Lotions speed up the tanning process while enriching your skin with the nutrients, and vitamins it needs to stay healthy! But which lotion is right for you?
TLDR
For rapid tanning results, use:
Fast - ACCELERATORS
Faster - NATURAL BRONZERS
Fastest - DHA (Self-Tanning) BRONZERS
ACCELERATORS
Accelerators, Intensifiers, and Maximizers are great lotions for beginner tanners, or tanners that want to build their colour as naturally as possible. We consider these lotions the base of the lotion pyramid. They are typically white or light caramel in colour, and feature ingredients that hydrate your skin while accelerating the tanning process. They encourage faster and deeper melanin production, causing you to see quicker colour that is naturally your own! Common ingredients include beta-carotene, peptides, and tyrosine.
NATURAL BRONZERS
The second step in the lotion pyramid are Natural Bronzers, which enhance the tan and enrich the skin via naturally-derived ingredients. These lotions typically appear brown in colour, so you'll leave your session with a light natural glow. You may also see the "guide bronze" from the lotion come off in the shower (but don't fret -- you're still building rapid, deeper colour). Generally, natural bronzers leave less risk of streaking or brassiness, while gently depositing gorgeous colour in the skin. Common ingredients are fruit pigments, henna, botanical oils, natural oxide or copper minerals. Our studio most frequently utilizes natural bronzers that include black walnut shell, cocoa or caramel extracts, and coffee extracts.
DHA (SELF-TANNING) BRONZERS
The top of the tanning pyramid belongs to DHA Bronzers, which are lotions that cause a self-tanning reaction and are great for dark results and faster gratification. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA for short) is the main ingredient used in sunless tanning products and spray tans. When DHA is applied to the skin, it causes a chemical reaction (that you can't feel) with your body's amino acids in the surface cells of the skin. This reaction causes a darkening effect, which simulates the look of a tan. DHA does not damage the skin, and is considered a natural and vegan product. The longer you leave DHA on, the deeper the results, which is great for the clients that want a rich glow, in fewer sessions. DHA lotions can be clear, or can also have an immediate cosmetic bronzer, which we refer to as a "guide bronze", because you want to be certain you're applying and rubbing DHA lotions in evenly.
